As I was planning my yoga class for the beginning of the year, I felt compelled to address the concept of New Years Resolutions, but to really look at the intention behind them, and to offer up some deep self-reflection for how to apply the magic and energy that this time of year brings. As I shared with my students, the New Year seems to carry with it an heir of excitement for newness and possibility; the opportunity to remake ourselves in some way. In essence, there’s this extra energy of transformation floating around, and it’s there for the taking, should we choose to recognize it and embrace it.
Even though our surface Selves may not realize it, our intuitive Selves FEEL that energy and we shift into a change mindset, the result being thoughts like: “I think I’ll go for a run today” or “Maybe I’ll make a smoothie for breakfast”. While there is NOTHING wrong with taking care of our physical bodies (in fact, it’s a necessity while here on Earth), the fact that many New Years Resolutions focused on making changes in this area don’t last much past the first two weeks of implementation hints at a misalignment of sorts. The very word “RESOLUTION” contains within it to be RESOLUTE, to be steady and unwavering on the path of our deepest intention or desire. And maybe you’re saying, “But I really do/did WANT to eat in a more nourishing way or create a regular exercise routine for myself!” I hear you! I believe you! But let me ask you, “What PART of you wanted it? WHY did you/do you want it?” The answers that rise up from these reflects might offer guidance as to why previous intentions/resolutions seemed to gradually fall from our consciousness.
In my experience, there are two primary reasons why the combination catalyst of New Year energy and our intentions don’t connect to create our highest good: 1) the desire is not aligned with our DEEPEST TRUTH and/or 2) our ego self see’s the possibility for BIG CHANGE and throws as many obstacles on our path as it can!
Let’s talk about each, and I would LOVE to hear YOUR thoughts in the comments below!
1)Are you in touch with your Deepest Truth? Reconnecting with your Inner Child
What does a typical day look like for you right now? Are you a free-floating flower, moving and unfolding into the fullness of your Self moment-by-moment as your intuition guides? Your days may be wildly inconsistent but you FEEL as steady flow of beautiful energy and feel great most of the time!
Are you a tightly-wound human machine, basing majority of your decisions on time and efficiency? Your days run like clockwork, and you get A LOT done, but you don’t really experience the joy in the process of any one list item (except maybe crossing it off!), and you feel SPENT at the end of each day; despite the deep exhaustion, you struggle to go to bed at night, fearing the possibility of tomorrow being EVEN MORE busy and out of control!
While I would LOVE for all of us to feel the brightness of living in sync with our intuitive Selves, most of us are probably somewhere in-between the two extremes, and unfortunately many of us feel like the description of the human machine is a SCARY accurate depiction of our own lives. When we are living from a place of survival, of “just getting by”, it is easy for the energy of our intentions to be clouded by desperation, and we grasp onto whatever is readily available in our external environment, that feels like it may offer more control or security. As an example: “My life feels out of control. But I need to lose weight and that I CAN control. That gym close to me is offering discounted rates. I’ll just get up an hour earlier/stay out an hour later and pound it out ‘til I’m where I want to be.” Your ego says “oh, goody! I LOVE control!” and together you take a mini sigh of relief; a clear-cut decision with clear-cut action steps.
Again, there is NOTHING wrong with the intention to take care of your physical body! What I am asking you to consider is; at the CORE of who you are, the place where your DEEPEST truth lies, is that what your heart wants? Is the heaviness that you feel stemming from physical weight, or from the weight that your Soul is carrying as a result of not being able to express itself? If you have NO IDEA what I am asking, think back to your younger self; your inner child: back when you were allowed to imagine, create, play, and feel the pure joy of simply BEING (I really hope you’ve indeed experienced this, and that your mind will allow you to remember). What did your days look like? What lit you up? What did you gravitate toward? How did you move and eat and interact with your world? And how is that experience different than how you currently experience your life? Dig into THAT!! Write, play, sing, color, paint, build, or nap! Speak to your heart with the love and care that you’d speak to your own child with; listen, and try to honor those longings with non-judgmental acceptance. When your intentions come from the deepest desires of your Soul, you’re getting at the root, the cause of current pain, and from there, BIG CHANGE can begin to unfold!
2)Is your Ego Self getting in the way of BIG CHANGE? It’s in your DNA!
Chances are, if you are here, you KNOW it! Your deepest self knows it. You know it because you’ve wanted to make this change for a long time, but you keep rationalizing why NOW is NOT the time to do it! First of all, don’t punish yourself for being human! We are biologically wired to steer clear of change. Change=uncertainty and uncertainty=danger (the possibility of it, that is). And guess what? It’s true! We don’t for CERTAIN know what we might encounter when we shift into a new way of being. What we often don’t consider is that this uncertain alternative might be BETTER, even WAY better than our current reality! Our brains tell us to consider all the cons and as my coach would say, a little “risk management” can be a good thing for our Free Spirit Flower Children! But balance in all things, right? At the same time that our rational, logical (fear-based) brains are shouting out reasons to be afraid, our hearts are whispering the deepest longings of our Soul. And you and I both know that THAT is where our greatness lies. It is in that space that we live life fully illuminated. So if you already know the deepest longings of your Soul, you FEEL the truth of it in your being; how can you begin to honor it? I like to practice the “living as if” principle. Live as if you were already doing it. If you had already stepped into this big change, how would your life be different? How would you feel? What would your days look like? What small steps can you take toward that? BELIEVE me, when you begin to step in the direction of your Soul-Aligned path, the Universe will move back toward you in ways you couldn’t even imagine! Believe in yourself. Trust in your Truth. It’s why you are here, love. Time to step into the fullness of who you are J. The world will be a better place because of it.
Peace, love, and blessings***
