. “When faced with the unfamiliar, witness your initial response (Avoidance? Defensiveness? Fear? Anger/irritation? Impatience? Excitement? Adventure? ). Know that this response is nothing but HABIT; a mode of operation you developed over the course of time/life experience. Know also that there is INFINITE SPACE within you to witness this, notice how it affects you (is it serving your highest good?), and choose to CHANGE or not. That power is within you; that power IS you.”
One of the beautiful opportunities that a regular practice of sitting with our selves in silence offers us to get VERY familiar with our minds and regular thought patterns! I’m not saying this is easy or effortless (at least not at first), but oh the power in KNOWING where you mind likes to go! When, for example, you find that your mind tends to think of a long list of to-do’s, you can label them as a “planning thought” and unhook them from your mind (Groceries? Planning thought. Pick kids up from practice? Planning thought. Dinner tonight? Planning thought. Workout? Planning thought. Laundry? Planning thought.. You will quickly see that what SEEMED like a million thoughts were actually all of one flavor (i.e., PLANNING!). While the intention is to label and release, settling back into the wisdom of stillness, if you remember something that needs to be taken care of and its consuming your awareness, have a pad of paper and pen beside you and write down “action items” that come up. Just watch that this isn’t an ego technique to distract you from yourself! One potent way to do this is to do a “mind dump” prior to sitting, writing down any/everything that comes to mind for 5-10 minutes (or however long you have).
